Andy Warhol was interested in the presentation of myth in his Polaroid images. In this work, Warhol photographs a sad, defeated looking man dressed as Uncle Sam, the iconic personification of the United States of America. As with many of his glamorous portraits of celebrities, Warhol photographed this figure against a white background and applied a white powder to his face. The neutral tonality of the background is similar to the subject’s eyes, hair and skin, giving a ghostly quality to the image.
