Money Plant
10" x 8"
Gelatin silver print
1956

American photographer Imogen Cunningham’s explorations of composition and lighting culminated in numerous images of plants, fruits and vegetables that often resembled architectural structures or abstracted organic patterns. Money Plant is a closely cropped image that captures the stems and shimmering leaves of the Lunaria species, known for its resemblance to silver dollars. Providing depth and dimension, the concave and convex surfaces of the dried iridescent seedpods reflect light and create shadows that suggest movement and lend drama to this otherwise simple scene.
